Jim Cahill has studied and practiced meditation for over 40 years, having been introduced to the path in the early 1970s by Indra Devi, a frequent guest in his home. His principle teacher is B. Alan Wallace. He was trained in evolutionary biology, psychology, and neuroscience at UCSD, and performed brain (EEG) research at Scripps Research Institute.
As founder of two biotechnology companies and author of chapters in medical textbooks, he has edited over 1,000 manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals. Jim is a board-certified biofeedback therapist, holds multiple patents, and has a graduate degree in Mind-Body Medicine.
Jim served as Director of Integrative Medicine for a homeless youth program, was a founder of Earth Day’s oceans programs, taught meditation and biofeedback at Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, taught contemplative neuroscience to monastics at Nalanda University, India, and participated in the landmark Shamatha Project as both yoga teacher and research subject, under Nobel laureate Elizabeth Blackburn.
Jim is passionate about seeking those views and practices from ancient contemplative traditions that are most accessible and practical for contemporary life. This requires inquiry into how these understandings migrated westward and cross-culturally, the rise of Buddhist Modernism, popular misinterpretations, the biohacking movement, and staying current on the trends in contemplative neuroscience, conative intelligence, habit formation science, cognitive biases, and mindfulness-based psychotherapies.
Residing in Hawaii with, Amy, his wife and dharma teacher, Jim develops programing and offers plain-language—often humorous—teachings in service of skillful means, to thousands of students per year, in local communities and through Sensei Wellness Retreats.
