Phillip Moffitt: A Founding Board Member of IMTA Paving the Way for Mindfulness Teachers

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to one of the founding members of IMTA, Phillip Moffitt, as he gracefully concludes his term. Phillip has played a pivotal role in the establishment of IMTA, serving as a driving force behind its inception. Interviewed by Tiffany A. Jackson, CAE, IMTA Executive Director

Among the many individuals who have played a pivotal role in the formation of the IMTA, Phillip Moffitt stands out as a prominent figure. As one of the founding board members, he contributed significantly to IMTA’s advancement.

Phillip is a Buddhist meditation teacher and writer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He served as Co-Guiding Teacher at Spirit Rock Meditation Center (2010-2018) and is an inspirational teacher who profoundly impacted numerous individuals on their mindfulness journey.

Phillip also holds the distinguished position of honorary co-founder and is the innovative creator of a practice method at the heart of the nonprofit organization known as Dharma Ground. Dharma Ground is dedicated to offering online Insight retreats and classes that integrate the Nine Bodies Insight map of consciousness and the wisdom of the dharma. This practice method first gathered an enthusiastic following during the pandemic and Phillip now supports a thriving online practice community.

Phillip also serves as the visionary founder and president of the Life Balance Institute, a nonprofit organization committed to training leaders, professionals, and individuals in the art of skillfully navigating major life transitions and living a values-based life.

As Phillip’s term serving on the IMTA founding board of directors comes to an end, he leaves a legacy of dedication and expertise. We took a moment to talk to Phillip about his experience and the founders’ vision for IMTA.

Tiffany Jackson: As a founding member, you’ve had a unique perspective on the organization’s early days. How do you envision the organization’s future and its role in the mindfulness community?

Phillip Moffitt: In threefold ways. One role of IMTA is upholding the standards of the offerings of Mindfulness Teachers, so they are well-qualified and have integrity. Why do we need standards? Because they protect us all and create trust. The whole community is protected by upholding standards.

Another role of IMTA is offering educational trainings so Mindfulness Teachers become evermore skillful and keep the inspiration of doing the work.

Lastly, IMTA can help the individual members and community as a whole have better skills and knowledge of organizational practices, therefore fostering the growth of the whole community and what it can give to all the different cultures being served by Mindfulness Teachers around the world.

Tiffany Jackson: What’s great about being an IMTA board member?

Phillip Moffitt: Being part of this mission is very satisfying and inspiring. It nourishes oneself as one's providing the service. It begins with a heart connection to the value that’s being offered to the larger community, and then an accountability within the board to meet the responsibility you take on, and to foster a trusting community where people can speak with safety and authenticity.

As an IMTA founding board member, Phillip’s impact continues to resonate. His commitment to teaching mindfulness serves as an inspiration.

With the support of leaders in the field, like Phillip Moffitt, the founding board of directors, and the dedication of its members, the IMTA is well on its way to achieving this vision and continuing to make a positive impact on the world of mindfulness. -IMTA
