Please tell us about your secular mindfulness meditation background and the population you serve.

Embarking on the path to becoming a Certified International Mindfulness Teacher, I've woven together two deeply personal stories, each marked by its own trials and revelations. My professional life, spanning over 22 years as a C-level executive for Fortune 500 companies, was filled with roles many might would describe as “sexy”: Chief Innovation Officer, Head of Customer Experience and Transformation, Operations Sr Director, among others. While these positions offered me a stage to influence and lead, they also demanded a pace and intensity that, over time, led me down a path of self-neglect. I navigated these challenges on autopilot, a state that, unbeknownst to me, was quietly eroding my wellbeing, culminating in anxiety, depression, and a life-altering panic attack. Parallel to this, my personal narrative as an introverted child who sought refuge and strength in Executive Coaching painted a starkly different picture. This part of my journey, spanning 17 years and leading me to become a member of the esteemed Forbes Coaches Council, was one of gradual self-discovery and empowerment. However, the true turning point came when I faced my mental health struggles head-on, guided by a psychiatrist who, upon concluding my treatment, introduced me to meditation. Despite my initial skepticism—stemming from my sporadic past attempts—I embraced the practice wholeheartedly. It wasn't long before I experienced its transformative power, leading me to a solemn vow: to integrate meditation into my life permanently and to champion the cause of mindfulness within the high-pressure environments of the corporate world. This commitment drove me to the Mindfulness Mexican Institute, under the guidance of Eric Lopez, where I became a Certified Mindfulness Teacher. Furthering my dedication, I attained certification as an International Mindfulness Teacher through IMTA. Fueled by a newfound purpose, I immersed myself in the Search Inside Yourself Program, subsequently crafting and delivering corporate programs designed to unlock the potential of consciousness among leaders. Leveraging my experiences as both a seasoned executive and a Senior Executive Coach, I, alongside my incredible partner Gina Marquez, now lead "The High-Level Consciousness for Business Program," witnessing its profound impact on the corporate sphere. This journey, bridging my professional achievements and personal revelations, is a testament to the transformative power of mindfulness. It underscores a message of hope and resilience, demonstrating that amidst the relentless demands of the corporate world, there lies the potential for profound personal growth and healing. My story, marked by both vulnerability and strength, serves as an invitation to others to explore the depths of their own resilience, to embrace mindfulness as a tool for not only surviving but thriving in any environment. It's a reminder that in the journey of life, sometimes the most challenging paths lead to the most beautiful destinations.

Tell us what secular mindfulness looks like in your part of the world.

Secular mindfulness has been gaining traction in Latin America, mirroring global trends toward mental health and personal well-being. While comprehensive data specific to Latin America is somewhat limited compared to regions like North America and Europe, several studies and reports highlight the growing interest and implementation of secular mindfulness practices across various sectors, including healthcare, education, and the corporate world.

  1. Healthcare Impact: A study published in the "Journal of Clinical Psychology" involving Brazilian participants demonstrated significant reductions in anxiety and depression symptoms following an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program. These findings align with global research underscoring mindfulness meditation's efficacy in mental health treatment.

  2. Educational Sector: In countries like Mexico and Argentina, mindfulness programs have been integrated into educational settings to improve focus, reduce stress, and enhance emotional regulation among students. For instance, the "Mindfulness Without Borders" organization has conducted programs in Latin American schools, focusing on developing life skills that foster well-being and resilience in young people.

  3. Corporate Adoption: The corporate sector in Latin America has also shown a growing interest in secular mindfulness as a tool for improving employee well-being and productivity. A report by the "International Journal of Human Resource Management" highlights the positive outcomes of mindfulness programs in reducing workplace stress and enhancing employee satisfaction and engagement. Companies across the region are increasingly incorporating mindfulness training into their employee wellness programs, recognizing its benefits for both individual well-being and organizational performance.

  4. Public Interest and Access: The rise of digital platforms offering mindfulness and meditation apps, such as "Headspace" and "Calm," has significantly increased access to mindfulness practices in Latin America. These platforms report a steady increase in users from the region, indicating a growing public interest in secular mindfulness practices.

  5. Research and Development: Academic institutions and research centers in Latin America are dedicating resources to study the impacts of mindfulness. The University of São Paulo in Brazil, for instance, has been at the forefront of mindfulness research, examining its effects on health and cognitive functions.

Despite these developments, the exact penetration rate and statistical data on secular mindfulness practice in Latin America remain fragmented. The region's diverse cultural, economic, and social landscapes suggest that the adoption and practice of secular mindfulness vary widely. However, the increased interest in mindfulness practices, supported by preliminary research findings and program implementations across various sectors, indicates a significant shift towards embracing mindfulness as a valuable tool for enhancing mental health, education, and workplace well-being in Latin America.
